Have you ever had thoughts rushing into your head leading you to become sick and not able to focus on your life? What was your first instinct? Grab your headphones and play whatever comes up on Spotify. A pervasive problem we face today is getting caught up in this Dunya leaving us exhausted both mentally and physically. Eventually, we try to seek anything that could heal, or distract us; the latter being easier and more prevalent. Instead of addressing our thoughts and emotions and working on them, we shut them off with, for example, music which is just a temporary fix (please note music is haram in Islam including instruments).
When you remove distractions, Allah سبحانھ وتعالى might guide you to return to him and start a journey of spiritual healing where getting closer to him, seeking his pleasure, and remembering him will be the medicine you need all along. Pause for a minute and realize that he chose your soul to be guided and to change. He had patience with you and continued to bless you despite you disobeying him many times. Allah has a lot of righteous souls (Dead or alive), prophets, and other creatures all worshiping him. He doesn’t need your prayers nor your worship…he is the الغني, but you certainly do! You ask him for ease when hardships appear in your life matters cause he is the اللطیف . You need him when no one is available to listen cause he is the السمیع. You never despair of his mercy after the guilt you felt when sinning cause he is the الرحمن الرحیم.
A beautiful realization is when you think that all the guilt you feel is Allah carving a path for you to repent so that you get closer to him and do more deeds…all because he wants to see your face in his Jannah! What a blessing! He could have taken our souls at any point before we repent, but he had patience with us and guided us. Remember that Allah never abandons his servants …just being Muslim and finding Islam is already a blessing on its own. From here, we will view each day as an opportunity to get closer to Allah, seek his pleasure, and do more good deeds. From here, you will seek a path to spiritual healing and inner peace. From here, you will realize that this world is just a beautiful lie….
Let me end this article with a hadith about being concerned about Dunya vs being concerned about Akhirah.
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever is concerned about the Hereafter, Allah will place richness in his heart, bring his affairs together, and the world will inevitably come to him. Whoever is concerned about the world, Allah will place poverty between his eyes, disorder his affairs, and he will get nothing of the world but what is decreed for him.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2465, Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani
